Appearing in Utah on Friday 20th June 2025, Salt Lake City is having a production of the better half of Romeo showcased in unique playwriting, the play from Broadway, & Juliet, in its greatest theater venue for the arts, George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater. Utilizing advanced hardware and brilliant interior architecture, George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater is just as fresh as the show that will be performing inside its halls.
The reimagined play, filled with pop songs from the current generation and premiering not more than 10 years ago, is a pioneer of the possibilities that contemporary dramatic arts can achieve. The musical's story, which centers around women overcoming the dictated societal norm of what way a woman is required to make the most of her life is a great change from the story we have ingrained from Shakespeare's original classic; amidst meeting new people and lessons along the way, Juliet and her companions takes on a conscious choice to live their own lives, and fully at that.
Shakespeare’s late play naturally revolves around love as the story's dominant trope, especially both the positive and negative aspects of passionate love. The continuation of Juliet’s story in the jukebox musical however is all about a woman's strength and taking control of your own fate, while placing attention on the decisions that women make. The two differing concepts that stem from scripts which were produced in two entirely unalike decades manifest how much the dramatic arts and its stories have evolved in the past years.
& Juliet is effortlessly able to present to us these two varying perspectives in the form of Shakespeare himself and his wife Anne Hathaway, who at several moments during the course of ‘& Juliet’ argue constantly about what should ensue for the female cast of characters. These arguments interjected with the other scenes of Juliet and her friends in Paris demonstrate how the play is not just entertaining, but also outright educational as it links the differences in messaging that is evident in both the previous Romeo & Juliet and the present-day play.
Whether a fan of the old Shakesperean play or a brand new theater buff, this acclaimed musical should be on top of the list for any theater fan. The unsurpassed show is not afraid to use an inventive twist to make a classic tale and its cast of characters quite for viewers of any generation.
