Set specifically during the time span concurrent with the 1832 French rebellion in Paris, the musical, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris, France who was pronounced guilty for close to 20 years as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he runs away and looks for a new life free from the law; he then uses a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer with a rigid belief in the law and set on apprehending and bringing the ex-convict to justice.

Taking place over a period of approximately two decades consisting of the show's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Valjean happens to be intertwined in one way or another with a few key characters throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory employees who is the mother of an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive child of Monsieur Madeleine, who is in fact Fantine’s daughter; Marius, a student on the side of the revolt and the true love of Cosette. Side roles shown in the play include the Thénardiers, abusive innkeepers who think only of themselves and are engrossed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their child, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and supporters of the insurgency namely Gavroche, a small but cunning child, and the revolt’s leader, Enjolras.

This motley cast of characters who are part of one struggle and their personal stories are brought to life on stage, not just with its 1800s French-based outfit and set design, but most especially with Les Mis being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With iconic songs including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing song list, Les Mis is able to portray the emotion, passion, and tragedy hiding behind every character that comes to life on stage.

The global hit's next stage will be in the beloved George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, running for a limited time on Wednesday 26th February 2025.
