Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the initial stage screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the identical name, Les Mis was transformed and turned into a theater play as a show only sung from start to finish, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that time period.

After a limited season performed in French in France, there was obviously great clamor to produce an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the musical score, he was so inspired and decided to produce an English interpretation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the new lyrics. The English version of Les Misérables only premiered with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but due to its impressive success and repeatedly sold-out shows, the show quickly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a significantly more premier location, and ran for almost 20 years. The musical then moved once again to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until today. Adding together all its runs since its inception in 1980, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running musical so far in this generation.

With 37 years in London's West End on its own and not even counting its productions in foreign locations, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is with certainty that this global hit perseveres and is incredible in the eyes of the show's attendees. The storyline and the epic musical score, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and selfless love, elevates the musical's quality due to the apparent passion behind each song and act staged. Les Misérables has become so critically-acclaimed that it has been converted to motion pictures several times and has been met with glowing reviews even on a separate platform.

This coming February’s season of Les Mis has it in Utah, where the show will be performed on Thursday 27th February 2025, in George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater, Salt Lake City.
