More than 40 years ago, a star show was born when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel created the very first stage screenplay for Les Misérables (previously in the French language). Based on Victor Hugo’s original book of the identical title, Les Mis was transformed into a musical performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was an enormous achievement in that era.

Following an initial showing in Paris, France, there was already overwhelming support to produce a more accessible version, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the score, he was so inspired and agreed to produce an English adaptation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the new songs. The English staging of Les Mis at first premiered with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but due to its astounding success and repeatedly sold-out shows, the show unsurprisingly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and top venue, and ran for 19 years. The West End play then relocated one more time to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and maintains its shows up until today. If you include all its tours since its inception four decades ago, Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running musical so far in this generation.

With almost 40 years in London's West End alone and not even enumerating its productions in foreign cities, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is undeniable that this global hit continues to be stunning in the perspective of the show's fanbase. The plot and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality due to the evident emotion behind the mask of each character and act presented. Les Mis has become so successful that the show has been turned into motion pictures repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on another medium.

This upcoming February’s run of Les Misérables brings it to Utah, where the show will be performed on Friday 28th February 2025, in George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater, Salt Lake City.
