Lila Downs was raised by an indigenous Mexican mother and a Scottish-American father. With two cultures influencing her, she first struggled to find her footing. But as she grew and went to college, she finally embraced the diverse cultures that she is a part of. A deep appreciation of her mother's culture made her return to her mother's hometown in Oaxaca, Mexico. There she started her career in music.

The Mexican singer began her career in 1994. Still, her big break came in Mexico in 1999 after her debut studio album "La Sandunga" was released.
