Moulin Rouge! tells the story of a backstage romance between Satine and Christian. Christian is a young poet and composer who visits France’s most exclusive and popular gentlemen’s club, Moulin Rouge. He hopes to have his music produced and performed by the club’s famous singers. Upon his arrival, he was quickly captivated by the club’s most popular performer, Satine. Meanwhile, Satine, a cabaret actress, is on a mission to impress an incoming guest, the Duke of Monroth. The Duke is the only one who can save Moulin Rouge from financial ruin. Thus, Satine plans to seduce the Duke and save the club. Upon meeting Christian, Satine mistakes him for the Duke and brings him backstage. She later discovers his true identity, but it is too late because she has already fallen in love with the young poet.
After a trial run in Boston, Moulin Rouge opened on Broadway in 2019. The original production was directed by the musical’s writer Baz Luhrmann. Moulin Rouge!, based on the 2001 film with the same name, featured a storyline written by John Logan, whose credits include The Gladiator, Spectre, Skyfall, and the play Red. One year later, the production premiered in London’s West End. From 2022 to 2023, Moulin Rouge embarks on a North American tour with stops in more than 15 major cities.

The spectacular, the ring-ding razzle dazzle, the gitchie gitchie ya-ya da-da: It’s all in Moulin Rouge!, a Broadway musical so stuffed with songs and sequins and sheer outrageous excess that it’s hard to catch a breath for most of its two-hour-and-45-minute runtime (at least not without inhaling an errant feather or a spangled scrap of confetti). – Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly.
