Synopsis

Wicked is a Broadway smash hit musical that follows the story of Elphaba and Glinda. They are two young women who become the unlikeliest of friends. As the story unfolds, Elphaba and Glinda fulfill their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. The story takes place before Dorothy sets foot in the magical land of Oz and includes a number of references to the 1939 family favorite movie The Wizard of Oz.

Elphaba is rejected for her green-colored skin, while Glinda is both popular and beautiful. Their one of a kind friendship is tested by their different personalities, dispute over a love interest, and Elphaba’s clash against the Wizard’s corrupt government. When she discovers all the corruption in the land of Oz, Elphaba is branded the Wicked Witch. Meanwhile, Glinda’s lust for popularity makes her power hungry. The Broadway smash hit explores several themes – everything from discrimination, corruption, and prejudice to sisterhood and resilience.

Creative Team

Mary Kate Morrissey will step out of the shoes of standby, and take on the role of Elphaba, full-time. Meanwhile, Alexandra Socha is Glinda, the Tony Award winner Donna McKechnie is Madame Morrible, Natalie Ortega is Nessarose, and Brad Oscar is the Wizard. Continuing Wicked cast members include the talented Jordan Litz as Fiyero, Jake Pedersen as Boq, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond.

The masterful creative team includes Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Book by Winnie Holzman, Choreography by Wayne Cilento, Set Designer by Eugene Lee, Costume Design by Susan Hilferty, Lighting Design by Kenneth Posner, and Sound Design by Tony Meola.

History & Awards

The popular Broadway production of Wicked has swept the Tony Awards. Nominated for an impressive 10 awards, the musical took home Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design.

The Drama Desk Awards was also another triumph. Wicked took home seven awards, including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical, Outstanding Orchestrations, Outstanding Set Design, as well as Outstanding Costume Design. What’s more, Wicked also clinched a whopping 10 Outer Critics Circle Awards and an esteemed Grammy Award for the Best Musical Show Album Award for the original cast recording. How amazing is that?!

The musical opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre more than two decades ago. Opening on the 30th October 2003, the original cast members included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. Wicked is set for a two part movie adaptation, with the first part opening in America this month (November 2024), and the second part scheduled for release a year later.

Eccles Theater

Eccles Theater is the perfect live performance venue to celebrate more than two decades of Wicked magic. The theater’s distinctive chandeliers, colorful balustrades, and striking terrazzo floor sets the stage for the glitz and glam of touring Broadway musicals. Located in Salt Lake City, Utah’s Eccles Theater has played host to the very best touring Broadway shows and concerts since 2016. Its Delta Performance Hall accommodates 2,468 people, while the intimate smaller black box theater welcomes 150-250 people. Wicked is running from 16th April through 25th May 2025 at the Eccles Theater, and it’s already Utah’s most anticipated event of the calendar!
